How to prepare for a job interview

Am going to show you how to nail that job interview and actually get your dream job. The job you thought was impossible to attain.

Having been interviewed several times (and passed) and having also been part of an interviewing board, I have gained some insights and am going to share with you some of the observations I have made with time.

Ground work

Usually, the moment you are invited for an interview, you are already 50% on your way to getting that dream job. It means you took your time,  applied for the job and  convinced the company/organisation to actually give you a shot in the interview. You have already done all this ground work.

You have to be prepared for anything. Not the kind of helmet/body armor anything but you have to be prepared and this is what am going to show you how to do in the sections below.

Preparing for that job interview

If you do the following, the chances are that you are going to outshine all the other people being interviewed and you will most likely be picked out of the crowd.

  1. Research the organisation

This is the first and very important step. It is actually better that you first do considerable research on the organisation even before you send in that application for the job.
You already have an invitation to an interview, let’s say you had already done some research on the company. Well, do some more. Get to understand what this company stands for, know their vision , mission and values. Trust me this information will come in handy. Even if they don’t ask you during the interview, your brain will feel prepared and that’s quite important

  2. Research the interviewers

Am sure after you handed in that application, you became anxious for a while. Maybe days, or weeks. Then one day your anxiety was ended with an email or a phone call or …name it. Whoever ended your anxiety, also happened to introduce themselves.

Remember this. Check them out on LinkedIn and other social media. Learn about the things they like and what kind of people they are  from their Instagram. Visit the company website, look at the senior management some of whom will most probably be interviewing and remember their names and titles.

During the interview be sure to address people by their surname and appropriate title and trust me you will be viewed as a serious, smart and confident person. This is important if you intend to get that job.

  3. Ready your original academic documents

Shortly after finishing college, I attended a certain interview with a reputable non-governmental organisation. I was being interviewed by four people. I felt that I had answered every question that was thrown at me. It lasted almost an hour and with each minute that passed, I felt more and more confident because I was answering every question right.

Until the last minute when they asked for my original academic documents. He said in a crystal clear voice “So Davis, let us have a look at your original academic documents” and my heart sunk. In the email they had sent me, they had specified to come with original documents and I had not bothered to read that. I had come with photocopies of my documents!

I tried to reason it out with them but it was too late, I had become automatically disqualified. Lesson learnt here is that you should read/ listen to every kind of communication carefully. Most importantly come with your original documents even if it was not indicated because some interviewers may just assume that this is obvious.

  4. Dressing for the day

There is an issue here. Should you put on your best dress or your best suit and tie? The trick is to look as formal as you can but not too formal and also try to put on something that will allow you to be comfortable.

When you are  comfortable, you will be more confident. Avoid shouting colors like orange and instead go for more neutral colors like grey.

  5. Prepare a few questions

In all the interviews I have been a part of, there is always that point in time when they ask you if you have any questions. Saying you don’t have any question at all may come off as timid and uninteresting .

Your safest bet is to ask a question or two. You can ask about when you should expect feedback, or you can ask how a typical day is at that company, but for God’s sake ask something.

  6. Don’t forget breakfast

It is very important that you eat before going for the interview. The brain uses alot of energy from the food you eat and you don’t want your brain lacking in energy while on the hot interview seat. You basically need to have all your faculties at top performance.

So have a reasonable breakfast (interviews are usually before noon). Your meal should contain a good balance of proteins and carbohydrates. Do not over eat though.

  7. Arrive in time

If the job interview is at 11:00am, be sure to arrive at-least 30 minutes before then. Be nice to the people you meet in this place. Say hello to the receptionist. And as you wait for the interview to begin, do not use your phone for social media. It can wait. Actually switch off your phone. The last thing you want is for it to ring in the middle of the interview process…oops!

  8. Be confident

You have done everything I have told you. There is no better preparation you are going to do at this point, so relax. You got this.

What is the worst possible thing that is going to happen? Ask yourself. Walk in confidently and keep eye contact. Do not sit before you are told to do so. If you are carrying anything e.g a bag, do not place it on the table or chair unless you are told to do so.

Try to feel as free as you can. Speak slowly even if you already anticipated the questions, breathe in before you speak and do not rush through your words, no mumbling. Avoid filler words, like, um. Everything is going to be okay after-all.

Thank me later.

Brainy prayer/quote by Douglous Adams

Protect me, Lord.

“Protect me from knowing what I don’t need to know. Protect me from even knowing that there are things to know that I don’t know.

Protect me from knowing that I decided not to know about the things that I decided not to know about. Amen.
Lord, lord, lord. Protect me from the consequences of the above prayer.”

Humans and the obvious

via Daily Prompt: Obvious

Beautiful day, huh?

Every so often, we say things, we comment on things. And that’s how we communicate, that’s how we start conversations,…that’s how we end discussions 🙂

I met my best friend on the road this morning and one if the first two sentences I said to her included the words “you’re smart!”. Of course she is. I am aware of that and she is aware of that. Heck, everyone can see it.  That’s why she dressed up this morning , that’s why she bought that wine red dress in the first place, so she could be smart.

As human beings, there is this need to keep stating the most obvious of things. Have never understood why, but am human after all. I keep hearing things like, you are tall, that’s a nice car, nice shoes; well, it’s not evil and it’s necessary.

It is necessary because sometimes, and only sometimes it reminds us of some obvious truths that we should not forget like the simple fact that you and I will one day be no more. Perhaps we say these things because after that time, there will be no chance of acknowledging them.

And, what some people may perceive as a lack of originality and lack of insight may be perceived by others to be a supportive thought and a push to agree with something in a way that may add value to the discussion. This thought may help create consensus and focus attention on a particular point of agreement that may lead to increased discussion and clarity.

You fell down? Did it hurt?

Men Cheating Vs Women Cheating

So, today during a lunch break. My colleagues and I had this interesting discussion about cheating in romantic relationships. When it comes this field(relationships), everyone has their own reservations, expectations, considerations. Now, all this affects the way the relationship goes , how long it lasts and how strong it will be. ….it also gives people like us what to write about 🙂

Okay, okay back to the main topic, the point of discussion was along these lines “Is it the same thing when a man cheats and when a woman cheats? “. Wait. Didn’t catch that. You just answered with something. Right? Not sure? Now, Colleague A (a guy) on the lunch table felt strongly that it is not the same thing!

“What?” went the girl at the other end of the table, “It is the same thing because you are seeing someone else apart from your partner!….”  Other girl, “Whether you are a man or a woman, it is the same thing! Both of them hurt!”

As it turns out, Colleague A had done his research on this particular subject, “In all religions and beliefs of the world, there is nowhere that a woman is allowed to have two men, ” Colleague A went on “actually, in some religions, it is fine for men to marry more than one woman”.  He went on to mention how God created a man, as the first prototype and blah blah. Colleague B (consider him to be an  innocent by stander) mentioned some tribe in Uganda where a woman can marry several men,…lol. An analogy was made about a key that can open many padlocks and that would be master key and a padlock that can be operated by many keys that would have something wrong with it.

Well, if this was a debate, it ended before the winner was identified. I hope to gather some more points next lunch break…hopefully, can’t promise anything. What’s your say?

Setting Up Your Development Environment for Cordova/PhoneGap Android projects

iPhone Dev Log

Updated 8/2/2015 to include Windows 7 setup. Adobe PhoneGap/Apache Cordova CLI quickly sets up your project files for the mobile environment. However, it requires a hefty setup of your development environment before you can begin making Android apps. If you are a working developer, all these tools are par for the course and you’ll have them already installed. If you are trying out Cordova/PhoneGap for the first time, and you are new to the programming world – welcome! – you need to install all the “dependencies” that Cordova/PhoneGap assumes are already resident on your system. Follow all these steps to make your Cordova/PhoneGap work go smoothly. Of course, these steps need to be done just once.
